Vale Encantado is an area of Atlantic Forest in Salvador, Bahia, which encompasses approximately 100 hectares and is located in the neighborhood of Patamares. It is home to more than 200 tree species and 100 bird species, as well as dozens of species of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. In 2016, it became an ecological park listed in the Urban Development Master Plan. However, on December 10, 2019, the City Council approved bill n° 299/19 which changed the boundaries of the Park, alleging the outdated cartography was used for its delimitation, which also had not taken into account the status of the land and included private and institutional properties. Since the passage of bill n° 299, a group of local citizens have mobilized against changing the boundaries of the Vale Encantado. They argue that in addition to being a refuge for fauna, its preservation is crucial for the regional microclimate and the environmental health of the entire city. In January 2020, scientific entities recommended the creation of the Vale Encantado Wildlife Refuge. Thousands have signed an online petition supporting the initiative. The mobilization (especially of the middle class) for the creation of this conservation area in Salvador shows the contradictions in a city that is part of the Cities4Forests network, but at the same time it allows the destruction of its vegetation by real estate interests and for transportation such as the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) and the Metro. The movement for the creation of the Park faces resistance from builders and developers, but has gained support from the population and achieved some victories.
