Language Teacher Demotivation and Burnout
摘要
The present chapter provides a synthesis of 25 empirical investigations located in leading databases that have examined different aspects of language teacher demotivation and burnout. The studies were analyzed in terms of their foci, populations and contexts, the methodological choices made (i.e., design, research instruments used), the variables they included, the triggers of demotivation and boredom they identified as well as factors that can prevent or alleviate these two negative phenomena. The analysis serves as a basis for several recommendations for future research. These include, inter alia, a need for more studies that would simultaneously focus on demotivation and burnout, coverage of wider populations and contexts, more emphasis on longitudinal and intervention-based designs, the development of a tool for examining demotivation, as well as taking into account a greater range of variables, in particular individual difference factors, as well as constellations of such variables.
