Sludge Management in Petroleum and Chemical Industry

Hazardous waste is produced substantially by chemical, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and oil refinery industrial processes. Globally, cost-effective treatment and proper disposal pose serious challenges because of the complex and mutable composition of sludge generated by the chemical and petroleum sectors. Refineries and other chemical businesses produce enormous amounts of oily waste, biological sludge, and chemical sludge waste, which has several detrimental consequences on the environment. Industrial wastewaters are incredibly diverse and specific to each industrial operation. The concentrations of pharmaceuticals in sludge are not regulated due to their micro size. There is no question regarding the detrimental effects of these micropollutants on the environment, as pharmaceutical wastes can significantly affect the health of living organisms. Therefore, appropriate procedures should be used to remove pharmaceutical waste from sludge. Low oil content sludges are hazardous from refineries with less than 40% recoverable oil in them. Before being disposed of, these sludges must be processed and rendered harmless. Encouragement of sustainable resource exploration and exploitation, which include both the treatment and management of these waste items, is crucial today. Waste can be processed in biological, physical, and chemical ways to reduce its environmental pollution to tolerable levels. Industrial wastewater treatment uses activated sludge treatment, encapsulation, and biodegradation in land farming, bioreactors, landfilling, incineration, thermal plasma, low-temperature conversion, etc., in a step-by-step approach to treating industrial wastewater. Generally, the sludge management technique to be explicitly applied depends on the nature and composition of the industrial wastewater and varies from industry to industry. In this chapter, the typical sludge management techniques used in the petroleum, chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors have been highlighted from the angles of sustainability, safety, and sound economics.
