Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is a non-invasive treatment that enables an increase in blood flow and tissue oxygenation, an improvement in cognitive performance and a reduction in mental stress. It has a variety of applications in the practice of sports physiotherapy, kinesiology, sports performance and strength training, sports psychology, and nutrition. PEMF therapy has been helpful in reducing the severity of sleep problems, low energy state, hypertension, and depression in addition to enhancing bone, cartilage, and tissue regeneration. Just as playing sports is highly beneficial to our health and fitness, PEMF can have a positive impact on sports performance and an athlete’s fitness. A PubMed search reveals that PEMF has been under active research and development for over 60 years. The purpose of this chapter is to explain the rationale for the use of PEMF therapy in sports medicine to improve recovery, regeneration, and adaptation from exercise, stress and injuries. In addition, information will be presented allowing for a better understanding of how PEMF works and its practical applications for various sports medicine disciplines. A thorough understanding of PEMF characteristics is needed to use PEMF confidently. Another aim is to provide a basic understanding of the underlying principles of PEMF and areas of current research in its applications for sports medicine.
