The Genesis and Evolution of Low-Intensity Gentle Stretching—microStretching®

microStretching® (microStretching is a registered trademark) is an evidenced-based low-intensity gentle stretching technique primarily focused on the proper recovery, regeneration, and adaptation of the body, with increases in range-of-motion being a secondary outcome. This technique consists of both passive and active stretching approaches that have been used to treat individuals suffering from various musculoskeletal injuries and conditions (osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, etc.), as well as elite, professional, amateur, and Para athletes. Unlike other forms of stretching, static, active (ballistic and dynamic), and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, it is a system consisting of four attributes (intensity, duration, frequency, and volume) and two principles (body position and stretch sequencing). Based on the assumption that activation of pain and discomfort during stretching engages the sympathetic nervous system, and that this is linked to inflammation, the paradigm shift facilitated with microStretching is that the “greatest gain is made without pain”. The intensity (qualitative response) of the stretch plays a significant role as evidenced by research. Low-intensity gentle stretching is believed to downregulate the sympathetic nervous system and inflammation since no pain is generated. In this chapter the reader will be introduced to a conjectured history of stretching since none has ever been recorded. This creates the foundation for the genesis and evolution of low-intensity gentle stretching as characterised by microStretching. In addition, examples of the attributes and principles are presented for the reader to gain a better understanding of the technique.
