Application of Sport Nutrition and Sports Psychology to Recovery
摘要
Adequate recovery following exercise has been shown to result in the restoration of physiological and psychological processes, allowing the athlete to compete or train repeatedly at an appropriate level. It is logical that the “recovery” strategy adopted will, to a large degree, depend on the expertise of the practitioner (e.g., coach, trainer, sports nutritionist, sports psychologist) responsible for athletes’ recovery. Guidelines on recovery following exercise acknowledge the separate contributions of sport psychology and sports nutrition. However, any recovery strategy employed is not exclusive to either the physiological or psychological domain. How these two disciplines function synergistically to prescribe recovery strategies for athletes while complementing the support offered by sports medicine has yet to be discussed. Utilising a dynamic interaction of disciplines, evidence is summarised, and recommendations provided on the integration of sports psychology and sports nutrition. An interdisciplinary approach has been proposed to achieve outcomes that would not be possible utilising the practice of a single discipline. The incorporation of sports psychology and sport nutrition is intuitively and theoretically complementary to an athlete’s post-exercise recovery. However, clinical studies to substantiate the superiority of interdisciplinary approaches versus adopting a single discipline alone, are still required.
