Indigenous peoples living with a disability in Australia—as is the case globally—face complex and layered challenges in dealing with a society structured around the majority non-Indigenous population. For Indigenous peoples living with a disability, this includes interacting with allopathic medicine and its western institutions. This chapter offers a brief portrait of the Australian context for Indigenous peoples with a disability, how Indigenous ways of knowing and doing differ from non-Indigenous approaches to disability. It also explores theoretical approaches that illuminate the challenges Indigenous people encounter in a settler colonial context. It offers a brief insight into paths forward, drawing on an Indigenous lens, for improving on the National Disability Insurance Scheme in Australia, which has radically changed the delivery of disability services in Australia, but has been met with criticism for its failure to tailor its approach to Indigenous ways.
