Verbal fluency is a language-based executive function that is negatively affected by normal age-related processes. Expressive language abilities of adults with autism spectrum disorder are understudied with a large focus on early development in autistic children. More research targeting adult populations is needed to map out the aging trajectories of fluency behavior and related language brain networks in autism. Understanding age-related and brain-based factors that influence executive-language abilities is important to support quality of life and improve socio-cognitive outcomes in older autistic adults.
