In Central Asia, the prevalence of blindness and vision loss has shown more significant variation between countries. Countries such as Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan demonstrate minimal changes in prevalence rates, while countries like Armenia and Georgia report sharp increases, particularly among males. The stability in countries like Kazakhstan suggests that ongoing interventions may be effective, while the increases observed in countries like Armenia warrant further investigation. Most individuals experiencing blindness or visual impairment are and will continue to be inhabitants of South Asian nations, with women being disproportionately afflicted at a rate of 54% compared to men. Following South Asia, the regions of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and subsequently other areas of this continent, together with the African continent, will encounter these issues more acutely than other parts of the world. This underscores the need for tailored health policies that address the unique challenges faced by each Central Asian country. National governments, in collaboration with international organizations such as the WHO, must prioritize the development of eye care programs that emphasize early detection, affordable treatment for age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), glaucoma, and cataracts, and equitable access to healthcare services. The economic burden of untreated blindness, as highlighted in prior literature, also calls for strategic investments in healthcare infrastructure and in human resources for eye care, such as training more ophthalmologists and supporting community health workers. Such strategies are essential for expanding service delivery, particularly in rural areas.
