Multiple Sclerosis
摘要
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, neurodegenerative, and inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system that affects around 2.8 million people worldwide. MS is considered to be a disease for young people and is characterized by heterogeneous clinical presentations, depending on areas of the central nervous system involved. The main characteristic of MS onset is an isolated clinical event of a neurological attack that lasts for around 24 hours. Although there is no specific test for diagnosing MS, a combination of magnetic resonance imaging scans, lumbar puncture results, and differential diagnosis are key tools used for confirming the disease and selecting optimal therapy. MS also has peripheral manifestations that vary depending on the site of affected nerves, which, if left untreated can lead to complications and disabilities that can affect the quality of life of the patient. Therefore, along with disease-modifying therapy, the patients also require specific pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapy based on these peripheral manifestations.
