Challenges and Innovations with Enhancing Healthcare Access for People with Disabilities
摘要
Access to health care is a fundamental right for all individuals, including those with disabilities. However, people with disabilities often encounter significant challenges in obtaining appropriate and timely healthcare. These challenges may be physical, behavioral, or systemic, leading to disparities in health outcomes and overall quality of life. Having a disability does not preclude an individual from leading a healthy life. However, people with disabilities represent a unique group that experiences significant health inequalities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an estimated 1.3 billion people have significant disabilities, accounting for 16% of the global population, or one in six people. Approximately 80% of individuals with disabilities reside in developing countries. Most of them are impoverished and struggle to access basic health services, including rehabilitation. Innovations in healthcare access for people with disabilities are crucial for preventing continued disparities in equitable healthcare. Globally, the growing recognition of the rights of people with disabilities has spurred interest in creative, scalable solutions that bridge the gaps between healthcare providers and those in need of their services. This chapter explores the barriers faced by individuals with disabilities in accessing healthcare, various innovations in technology, policy, and community initiatives that are transforming healthcare access and offers recommendations to improve the quality, efficiency, inclusiveness, and accessibility of healthcare services.
