Biology of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

Survivors of trauma are often diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which has multiple treatment options for remission of symptoms, including pharmacological and behavioral therapies. However, different populations have diverging susceptibilities to stress, underscoring the need for precise treatment strategies beyond a one-size-fits-all measure. We propose systems biology as a novel approach that uses pharmacogenomics and molecular medicine to provide personalized treatment in PTSD. Molecular routes in such approaches include neuroinflammatory networks and neurotrophin signaling pathways that can be targeted through novel drugs (e.g., psychedelics) as well as non-pharmacological measures (e.g., neurostimulation). The future of PTSD treatment hinges on leveraging computational tools to harness genomic data and genetic signatures, in order to design, develop, and deliver efficient therapeutics to trauma-exposed, vulnerable population across the globe.
