Women’s Pelvic-floor Muscle Dysfunction
摘要
Pelvic-floor Muscle Dysfunction (PFMD) affects about 25% of adult females across the world, and results in potentially debilitating problems across a range of physical and psychological domains. Physically, PFMD can involve urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, sexual dysfunction, and pelvic pain. Additionally, a range of psychological issues occur with PFMD, including depression, anxiety, and trauma. The two sets of signs and symptoms are outlined, and their interactions explored. The risk factors for PFMD conditions are discussed, and some potential common genetic, physical, social, and psychological sources across symptoms are suggested: particularly, possible roles for early trauma, and its relationship to some genetic factors. Treatment options involving a multidisciplinary approach, including surgical, physiotherapy and psychological approaches are discussed, and the common factors promoting successful treatment (turning points in therapy) are highlighted.
