摘要
Palliative care aims to enhance the quality of life for patients with life-limiting illnesses by addressing their physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs. This chapter examines the unique intersection of palliative care and disability, emphasizing the critical importance of diversity, inclusion, and equity in delivering effective care for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities. It commences by explicating palliative care and its fundamental components, including symptom management, psychosocial support, spiritual care, and advance care planning. Subsequently, the chapter delves into the specific needs and challenges encountered by individuals with disabilities in obtaining palliative care, highlighting barriers such as communication challenges, healthcare access disparities, and systemic inequities. The ethical considerations section addresses the importance of equity in care, informed consent, and quality-of-life assessments tailored to individuals with disabilities. Best practices for providing palliative care to this population are discussed, including personalized care plans, an interdisciplinary approach, and community engagement. The chapter also presents successful strategies for addressing communication barriers and providing tailored palliative care. Policy and advocacy are recognized as essential factors in ensuring accessible and inclusive palliative care. It also highlights the significance of international collaboration and funding to bolster palliative care in low- and middle-income countries. By addressing the unique needs of individuals with disabilities, promoting inclusive practices, and advocating for equitable policies, this chapter furnishes a comprehensive overview of how to enhance the quality of palliative care for this diverse population. Continuous efforts to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into palliative care will guarantee that all individuals receive compassionate, respectful, and person-centered care.
