The current increase in human life expectancy does not always seem to be accompanied by an equivalent increase in health span. In fact, especially in the elderly, it is not uncommon for certain disabling conditions to set in with advancing age due to aberrant cellular phenomena or the accumulation of cellular mutations. In this regard, cell death is a complex physiological and/or pathological process that occurs when it is necessary to eliminate old or harmful cells in favor of replacement by new and healthy ones. It is involved in various physiological phenomena (i.e., cell development and cellular homeostasis), but its dysregulation may lead to the onset of several diseases which can be disabling to humans. Although their molecular mechanisms remain unclear, several new types of cell death have been identified, especially during disabilities. Human disabilities, such as stroke, autism, and brain damage, are conditions that can lead to disabling conditions and affect people of all ages with a higher prevalence for the elderly. Disabilities can be physical, mental, sensory by impairing human daily life. Furthermore, different diseases may cause the same disability while the same diseases may cause different disabilities. In this entry, the molecular mechanisms underlying the genesis of disabilities and how cell deaths are both regulated and involved during human disabilities initiation and development are summarized.
