AAC Strategies for People with Neurodevelopmental Disorders
摘要
People with autism spectrum disorders and intellectual disabilities may experience significant problems in daily social interactions due to lack of speech and communication impairments. Accordingly, their quality of life may be relevantly hampered with an increased caregivers’ and families’ burden. In this chapter, the effectiveness and the suitability of aided-alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) programs useful to help individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities is assessed. Furthermore, in this chapter the outcomes on their quality of life, and the reduction on families’ and caregivers’ burden are evaluated. Finally, this chapter proposes useful insights for future research and clinical practice. Based on the literature examined, the results were fairly encouraging and promising. Participants’ quality of life was significantly improved and caregivers’ burden reduced. AAC strategies may successfully enhance social interactions among people with autism and intellectual disabilities with beneficial outcomes on their quality of life and reduction of caregivers’ burden.
