In this chapter, I review scholarly literature on the history of the earth sciences in the Cold War, focusing particularly on developments in North America and Europe. I explore the impact of military patronage and national security concerns on this research community, the influence of the International Geophysical Year on scientific programs and scientific internationalism, and the ways that funding for the physical environmental sciences shaped the production and dissemination of knowledge. I conclude with ideas about potentially fruitful new research questions.
