In general, the mainstay of curative treatment of rectal cancer is oncologic resection. The treatment of rectal cancer, however, is constantly evolving in accordance with the disease stage. Management of stage IV rectal cancer, which has the worst prognostic outlook, must be carefully assessed in terms of local symptoms and patient comorbidities.
