Sclerosis, using a variety of substances, is used to treat small, bleeding internal hemorrhoids. Because the risk of bleeding is low, sclerosis may be particularly attractive for patients with bleeding tendencies such as those receiving antiplatelet or anticoagulation therapy. Potential complications include rectal perforation, fistulas, hemorrhage, infection, and pain. Sclerosis may be done under direct vision through an anoscope or endoscope. The site of injection varies in the literature.
