The transverse colon has a generous mesentery that usually allows colonic exteriorization above the skin without tension. Colonic mobilization from the retroperitoneum is not necessary. The approximate location of the transverse colon can be determined preoperatively by determining its position relative to a radiopaque marker such as a coin on plain radiograph.
