The health and survival of natural teeth and dental implants is related to various factors. One of the most salient factors is the soft tissue they are surrounded by. Natural tooth is supported by periodontal ligament (PDL), while a dental implant is not surrounded by such a structure. There are other significant differences regarding fibers orientation, blood supply, and junctional epithelium between soft tissue around the natural tooth and dental implant. In this chapter, our goal is to provide some basic information on tooth and implant soft tissue anatomy. This information is mandatory for treatment planning and also evaluating risk factors affecting dental implant survival.
