Ecosystem-Based Adaptation to Climate Change in a Tropical Mountainous Ecosystem

Tropical mountains are highly prone to climate change impacts. Little attention has been paid to the strategy of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) to climate change in tropical mountains. The objectives of this study were (i) to examine the wetland/forest ecosystem services, (ii) to ascertain climate change impacts on ecosystem services and EbA measures, and (iii) to understand the challenges facing EbA interventions implemented at national, district, and community levels. Our findings reveal that forest ecosystems provide food supplies in the form of fruits, nuts, mushrooms, honey, or spices, while the wetland supplies included food (fish, fruits, etc.), water quality regulation, water supply for domestic and non-domestic uses (production, industry, etc.), supply of medicinal plants, and soil erosion control. The perceived impacts of climate change reported include a decline in soil fertility and loss of soil and biodiversity. In response, the adopted trails of EbA interventions that target ecosystem restoration and livelihood enhancement are mulching, crop diversification, reafforestation/afforestation, agroforestry, zero grazing, desilting of rivers, use of energy-saving technologies, planting drought-resistant crop varieties, alternative income generation, rainwater harvesting, irrigation of crops, restoration of riverbanks, terracing, and construction of contour bunds and drainage channels in farmlands. However, this strategy is challenged by limited coordination among implementing partners, inadequate funding for natural resources management, land fragmentation, limited livelihood options, land conflicts, and high costs of knowledge transfer. To strengthen EbA activities, this study recommends the promotion of regular EbA training, technical backstopping, and sensitization on restoration measures; integration of EbA into sectoral and development plans; and wide involvement of communities in EbA activities.
