Agroforestry: The Historic Nature-Based Solutions to Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation

Climate change is a universal issue that is not restricted to any country’s internal boundaries but extends far beyond. Recently, agroforestry has gained awareness in global climate gatherings for its ability to sink carbon as it is perceived to be playing a crucial role in offsetting greenhouse gases and creating sustainable employment, among others. This chapter attempts some historic assessment of the potential of traditional agroforestry technique as intervention in the management of natural resources that would serve human needs as well as the sustainability of the agricultural lands and forests with a view to mitigating climate change impact. Although nature-based solutions (NBS) as a viable option have been advanced as one of the principal tools for solving various environmental and problem emanating from society, yet the concept and real-life application are still unfolding. Therefore, this study is designed to identify historical traditional agroforestry methods used by subsistence farmers over time with their climate change adaptation and mitigation potentials. This work also examined the capability of agroforestry methods for the well-being of mankind with potential for climate mitigation as well as adaptation as it highlights how agroforestry helps sequester carbon. The chapter concludes that there is a reasonable case for the use of agroforestry techniques in most rural communities in developing countries as a cost-efficient means of maintaining soil productivity and mitigating climate change.
