Approaches and Policies to Improving the Diet of Young People
摘要
Nutrition is a human right particularly crucial during childhood for physical and cognitive development. Early dietary habits tend to persist into adulthood influencing long-term health. Even though, global dietary patterns are shifting toward processed and ultra-processed foods high in sugars and fats, contributing to inadequate nutrient intake and leading to malnutrition, due to excess, but also deficiency. Therefore, addressing these changes requires multifaceted policies considering economic, social, and environmental factors. Schools play a pivotal role in promoting healthy eating through structured nutrition programs and regulatory standards. WHO and UNICEF support the efforts in schools with guidelines and programs aimed at improving nutrition. School nutrition interventions focus on integrating education and feeding programs toward healthier dietary habits among students. Monitoring and evaluation are essential to these programs. Tools like the Global School-based Student Health Survey enable data collection, facilitating policy adjustments and ensuring ongoing effectiveness in improving children’s nutrition globally.
