Traditional Foods, the Mediterranean Diet, and Health Promotion
摘要
The Mediterranean Diet, originating from the regions bordering the Mediterranean Sea, has gained global recognition for its proved health benefits. This chapter explores the role of the traditional eating habits of the Mediterranean diet and their contribution to health. Due to its focus on nutrient-dense, plant-based foods, healthy fats, and sustainable eating habits, the Mediterranean diet has been associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and cognitive decline conditions. Specific cooking methods that are traditionally used for Mediterranean dishes, such as fermentation, sautéing, and slow cooking, are also discussed in relation to their impact on nutrient retention and bioavailability. Additionally, practical recommendations are offered for integrating the Mediterranean diet into public health, clinical practices, and policies. Guidelines and strategies for healthcare professionals, community leaders, and policymakers to promote the adoption of this diet as an approach to improve public health worldwide are also discussed.
