Dietary Herbs as Nutraceuticals: Applications to Treating Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
摘要
Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a metabolic-reproductive disorder affecting women at reproductive age and causing hormonal imbalances and physical symptoms such as weight gain, acne, breast pain, hair thinning, irregular periods, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. The disorder affects about one in every 15–20% women worldwide and is characterized by an imbalance between luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, leading to male-like hair patterns, acne, irregular menstrual cycles, and infertility. In this study, the data was collected with the help of several sources like Elsevier, ScienceDirect, Scopus, journal of reproduction and endocrine, PubMed, and Google scholar database from year 1997 to 2024. In this chapter, we will discuss the current therapeutic approaches for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and dietary herbs (nutraceuticals) such as various herbs, vitamin D, and NAC supplements for PCOS. This study concluded that natural herbs as nutraceutical having anti-inflammatory, antioxidants, and effect on androgen excretion were proven beneficial in the management of polycystic ovarian syndrome.
