Retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinitis pigmentosa significantly impact vision and quality of life. Effective drug delivery to the retina remains a major challenge due to anatomical and physiological barriers, particularly the blood-retinal barrier. This chapter explores current and emerging strategies to enhance drug delivery for retinal diseases, including intravitreal injections, intravitreal implants, and nanotechnology-based systems. Nanoparticles have shown promise in improving drug penetration, controlled release, and targeted delivery to retinal cells. Sustained-release devices and port delivery systems are under active development to reduce treatment burden. Advances in imaging technologies, minimally invasive techniques, and personalized medicine approaches are enhancing the precision and efficacy of ocular therapies. Despite significant progress, challenges such as drug stability, long-term safety, and device biocompatibility persist. The interdisciplinary collaboration between ophthalmology, pharmacology, and engineering is crucial for developing innovative, safe, and effective drug delivery systems. Ultimately, continued advancements in this dynamic field hold the promise of more effective, less invasive treatments, preserving vision and improving quality of life for millions worldwide.
