This chapter introduces the basic characteristics of the theoretically proven voltage source converter (VSC) types, their basic concepts and working principles. It highlights the technological evolution of the modular multilevel converter (MMC), which has become the main type of VSC-HVDC converter in practical applications. The working principle, control strategy and test items of MMC suitable for HVDC transmission projects are introduced.
