HVDC, Its Design, Application, Controllability, and Comparison to AC Transmission

HVDC is often the preferred choice for moving power between remotely located power generation sources to load centers. The move towards renewable energy is one driving factor especially for offshore wind power applications but also for connections between AC power systems that cannot be operated in synchronism with each other. HVDC converter technologies using voltage sourced converters (VSC) developed in the late 1990s have created opportunities for interconnections of HVDC systems, which can make HVDC systems perform in ways similar to AC systems. This opens possibilities for building HVDC grids. This chapter describes many different HVDC system applications intended to illustrate how HVDC fits into AC systems. The chapter also describes the key differences between AC and HVDC systems to highlight where one or the other technology might be most beneficial.
