As the climate crisis heightens, the Indian universities have emerged as vital catalysts in not just promoting climate literacy but also in driving climate initiatives of all kinds. This chapter represents a unique, detailed exploration of how these institutions are directly confronting climate change through not just research but also the even more crucial vehicle of education, “all the while aligning with national policy and legislation.” Using the Social-Ecological Systems framework, this chapter examines how government actions aimed at enhancing climate awareness intersect with the university strategies just mentioned. In the context of yearly policies and a now very familiar National Climate Change Action Plan, this research looks at how a select handful of universities have not just woven these into their curricula but also into a broad set of community engagement strategies. In doing so, it evaluates the impact, if not clearly in terms of outcomes, in terms of obvious and significant impacts on a sizeable portion of the Indian population that these initiatives might be having in fostering climate understanding and related actions on the part of students and the general public.
