The chapter provides an introductory overview of the Handbook of Innovation. Perspectives from the social sciences, edited by Ingo Schulz-Schaeffer, Arnold Windeler, and Birgit Blättel-Mink, explain the concept of the book. Based on a concise reconstruction of the development of innovation research into a field of research on its own, it shows that this is a history of the gradual expansion of innovation research into the social sciences. The chapter thus establishes the main themes of the book, the structure of which is then briefly presented.
