Legal innovation research examines the influence that law has, on the one hand, on innovations external to law (technological and social innovations) and, on the other hand, on innovations internal to law (innovations within law itself). It is only recently that legal scholars have sought to interface more strongly with innovation researchers in other disciplines, such as economics, social and political science, or linguistics. The article deals with the status of legally oriented research concerning innovations external to law and innovations internal to law. The article especially refers to the need for and the restrictions of getting access to and generating better access to relevant information and knowledge. Then, remarks follow on manifestations of innovations in law and on typical innovators. Of particular interest are judicial innovations relating to fundamental rights.
