Climate Resistance of Health Systems
摘要
In 2023, over 28 extreme natural disasters cost an estimated 74,000 lives globally, and 2024 has potential to be even more disastrous (UNDRR, 2023). Natural disasters and weather events are sudden in timing, occur outside of normal patterns, and cause damage to humans and nature (Ebi et al., 2022). An event can be considered extreme based on a variety of factors, such as the severity of the storm, accuracy of predictions, and the degree the event endangers a population (Ebi et al., 2022). Earthquakes, flooding, wildfires, and landslides are devastating to human populations during each event, but tolls on human lives continue to grow for months and sometimes years following a natural disaster (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 2024). Spread of communicable disease, failure of health infrastructure, and barriers to resources are a few of the numerous health implications of extreme weather events (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, 2024).
