Water resource management in West Africa is a complex and dynamic process, resulting in a variety of challenges. The primary objective of this chapter is to explore and evaluate innovative approaches to sustainable water management specifically within diverse West African ecosystems. Several key strategies are being implemented and explored: water-smart agriculture, intelligent irrigation techniques such as drip irrigation and microsprinklers that minimize water loss, water harvesting techniques to capture and store rainwater, conservation tillage practices that improve soil water retention, and the promotion of drought-tolerant and climate-resilient crop varieties. Real-world examples, like the implementation of drip irrigation in North Africa and rainwater harvesting in the Sahel region, demonstrate that progress is possible, even in the face of significant challenges. Community-based water management emphasizes local participation and empowerment in governing water resources. A critical area of analysis is how to bolster regional cooperation to ensure the equitable and sustainable management of transboundary water resources, especially in the context of increasing climate variability and competing demands.
