Modeling and Forecasting Health Hazards

The environment and human health are at risk of exposure to pesticides through various ways such as pesticide residues, storage and disposal practices, poor management of spraying equipment, and lack of protective equipment. The lack of proper planning and management tools on pesticide use and handling in Zimbabwe warrants for the need to implement nationally appropriate social protection systems and measures to achieve substantial coverage of the poor and vulnerable. There is evidence that there is no or non-functional policy frameworks at national, regional, and internal levels to support accelerated investment in poverty eradication actions. The development of these planning management tools and policy frameworks help reduce number of deaths and illness from hazardous chemicals, and air, water, and soil pollution and contamination. In this study, we used diagnostic (quantitative) surveys, formal interviews (qualitative), field observations, and sample collection to gather information to assess exposure, knowledge of pesticides, and safety practices. The results showed that there are interventions needed on peoples’ beliefs, attitudes, and knowledge of farmers. The results also showed the need to fix time constraints, economic systems, poor machinery designs, comfort issues in hot weather, and lack of functional policy and regulatory frameworks.
