Family Life in America in HBO’s The Last of Us
摘要
This essay will analyze the first series of HBO’s televisual adaptation The Last of Us (2023). Beginning as a videogame initially released for the PlayStation 3 system in 2013, both the game and show have received unanimous critical acclaim and slotted comfortably into the abundance of zombie media that pervades our popular culture. Like so many other contemporary zombie narratives, at the center of The Last of Us is a family unit that evolves and reshapes itself as the story progresses. It is the changes in these familial units and the consequent conflicts that arise from these changes that is of interest to scholars. Through a close reading of the characters and narrative, this essay aims to explore the shows depiction of family life in America in the early twenty-first century through the lens of a zombie narrative and how traditional family roles are subverted. The fundamental aim of this exploration is to establish what this story can tell audiences about the make-up and nature of families in a time when social changes have seen conceptions of the family undergo significant changes.
