Zombie outbreaks resemble the effects of climate change in a number of ways, so zombie narratives provide an excellent tool for commenting on the environment, which is such a large and complex phenomenon that it is very difficult to represent directly in a convincing way. The general parallels between zombie outbreaks and the effects of climate change are quite clear given that both are apocalyptic events. Meanwhile, many zombie films have been read as commentaries on the effects of consumerism, which is also relevant to climate change, given that consumerism is a major cause of climate change. In addition, zombie films quite frequently contain revenge-of-nature elements that depict their zombie outbreaks as retribution for damage done to nature by human activity (such as environmental pollution), which has clear relevance to climate change. And, finally, recent zombie films have begun to comment more explicitly on environmental issues, including a tendency for zombie narratives produced from marginalized cultural perspectives to attribute their zombie outbreaks to the damage done to the natural environment by mainstream industrial capitalism.
