This chapter provides an overview of various ways zombies have evolved from their start in the Caribbean, examining how they reflect the fears and anxieties of each particular zeitgeist. Starting from their original incarnation as slaves in Haiti created by voodoo doctors, through to their role as a member of an “anonymous horde” during the post-World War II years, then to the George Romero years, leading up to their current incarnation as a carrier of viral disease. Various specific texts are examined, including The Magic Island, the book that introduced zombies to the United States, as well as movies such as White Zombie (1932), The Ghost Breakers (1940), Night of the Living Dead (1968), and Shaun of the Dead (2004), along with the Resident Evil franchise.
