This article provides a general overview of notable Japanese zombie films and their characteristics. It identifies three stages in the evolution of zombie themes in Japanese cinema: early productions from the 1990s to the early 2000s, second-wave films from the late 2000s to the early 2010s, and big-budget movies released after 2015. The article argues that, despite the relative popularity of the zombie motif, Japanese zombie movies span a wide variety of genres and do not follow uniform conventions, making it impossible to view them as a coherent category. Many of these films are known for their experimental and visceral qualities, which, despite minimal budgets and low production values, have often helped them achieve transnational cult status. Beyond this trend, there are several artistic and contemplative productions, as well as recent blockbusters that align with the transnational zombie genre. The article also explores the assimilation of zombie narratives into the broader cinematic heritage of Japanese film, examining unique themes in these movies and their sociocultural contexts.
