Doom: The Birth of Zombie Gaming
摘要
The zombie/human relationship involves a delicate dance of constantly reversing roles with no definitive predator or prey, and videogames have embraced and enabled this dance. Since the first zombie shuffled across screens in 1984, the medium’s interactivity has allowed a player to experience the struggles of surviving in a zombie-infested world—and the sick satisfaction that comes with destroying them. While destroying zombies is indeed fun, they are there to do more than simply die (again). Across media, the zombie is a cultural object that reflects and reveals the social context of its birth. Often found in apocalyptic settings, the world the videogame zombie resides in is often a fully realized and populated game space that the player explores, often freely. With the seminal series Resident Evil threading through the chapter, I will explore the evolution of the zombie in videogames, and consider how, using world-building techniques and often extensive lore and background, videogames use the undead to highlight societal issues that are part of the human experience.
