We tend to think of the early zombie films from Hollywood as be predominantly linked to the voodoo variety with classics such as White Zombie (Halperin 1932), Ghost Breakers (Marshall 1940), and I Walked with a Zombie (1943: Tournier) being key texts in the ongoing evolution of the undead until the arrival of George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead in 1968. However, as shall be shown here, this progression was a far more varied and complicated trajectory and that zombies quickly divested themselves from their connection to Haiti to join the more polyvalent pantheon of Hollywood monsters that terrorized American audiences in the 1930s to the 1960s.
