It took twenty years, between 1969 and 1989, for francophone researchers to give Schelling’s reception a monographic and thematic grounding capable of supporting a decisive élan of translation and dissemination. To render Schelling’s thought accessible—a thought for which the major texts were, until then, either untranslated or poorly translated in French—there was a dire need for a work of clearing and re-grounding. This Schellingian re-grounding of German Idealism gave an editorial legitimacy to multiple projects of translation that, within a period of merely fifteen years, from 1980–1995, opened a way of access to the unpublished works of Schelling’s late philosophy, improved upon the rough translations of the middle works, and enriched the corpus of his early philosophy. Thanks to this élan, deepened in the following decade through and by an exploration of Schelling’s more technical texts like his lecture manuscripts and the preliminary drafts of the major works of the positive philosophy, a new generation of interpreters and readers were granted free rein to give new meaning to his multiform thought.
