Not only did Schelling repeatedly address theological questions in his work, he was also a trained theologian himself. From 1790 to 1795, he studied Protestant theology at the University of Tübingen. This article examines the complex relationship between philosophy and theology in Schelling’s work from a work-historical perspective. Based on his exegetical-theological studies during his time at the Tübingen monastery, the article reconstructs Schelling’s interpretations of theology and Christianity in his writings on the philosophy of identity around 1800 and in his later works. It shows that Schelling not only attentively registered the theological and religio-philosophical debates of his time, but also developed an independent interpretation of religion and its history in his late work, in which his lifelong reflections on this subject area are bundled.
