This chapter examines the critical role of communication in veterinary medicine within the unique bilingual and multicultural context of Hong Kong. It highlights the challenges and strategies for navigating interactions between English-speaking veterinarians and Cantonese-speaking clients, emphasizing the importance of empathy, cultural sensitivity, and linguistic flexibility in fostering trust and client adherence to treatment plans. The chapter explores the use of translanguaging as a tool to bridge linguistic divides and provides examples of how veterinary professionals address complex topics such as euthanasia, surgical procedures, and interdisciplinary collaboration. It also underscores the need for tailored pedagogical approaches in veterinary education, focusing on bilingual communication, client-centred care, and cross-disciplinary teamwork. By integrating practical training methods such as simulated consultations, case-based learning, and role-playing, veterinary programmes can better prepare students to meet the demands of Hong Kong’s diverse veterinary landscape.
