In the context of the impact of climate change, the 2024 European Elections, the rise of anti-system parties, and end of the NextGenerationEU in 2026, this chapter analyzes the role of digital technologies in aiding and building trust in the Green Transition. The methodology employed is a comprehensive review of cross-sector academic literature, recent reports, laws, regulations, and working documents, as well as interviews and conversations with leading scholars and attendance to relevant high-level conferences. This chapter, and the analytical approach taken in it, stem from the need for interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly between digital technology and legal/policy sectors, as called for by various institutions and academia. The results highlight the main EU challenge as that of financing its dual transition due to the absence of a common capital market, limited political and market integration, and fragmented infrastructure among Member States, despite initiatives such as the NextGenerationEU. In Italy, private investment is reportedly ready for the dual transition, but public inefficiencies hinder progress. The study suggests leveraging blockchain or similar digital automation to enhance renewable energy markets, optimize product supply chains/life-cycles, and improve waste management. This could also help to combat criminal infiltration in these sectors, which undermines fair competition and results in financial losses for the EU.
