This empirical study investigates the resilience strategies against weather hazards adopted by tea farmers in Pinglin, New Taipei City, Taiwan. Qualitative and quantitative methods were applied to establish the main hazard threat to tea farming in the area and identify the different mechanisms farmers use to increase their resilience capacities against weather hazards. Following interviews with six tea farmers, a content analysis was conducted to categorize behavioral, economic, and ecological factors into different components of a resilience conceptual framework consisting of awareness, coping mechanisms, and adaptation. The results revealed that drought is the main hazard of concern for tea farmers in Pinglin. Species choice is a critical tool in dealing with drought by helping farmers generate income. The resistance of the Jin Xuan species helps farmers produce tea in the summer, whereas the less resistant Oolong species helps farmers sell specialized tea at higher prices. Eco-friendly tea cultivation is also an effective tool for tea farmers to reduce the impact of adverse weather conditions on their businesses. It diversifies sales and helps develop specialized tea products that increase income. Moreover, farmers involved in wild tea cultivation can also reap mitigation benefits to prevent losses. This study also shows that farmers frequently apply horticultural methods to their plantations or avoid harvests to cope with drought and typhoons. Subsidies for drought irrigation were identified as an important drought relief mechanism.
