Vitexin (8-β-D-glucopyranoside-apigenin) is a type of flavonoid compound contained in various plant species, appears to be a promising metabolite that potentially possesses therapeutic properties and beneficial pharmacological effects. It has been utilized as an active ingredient in the traditional medicines over the world, as a form of complementary or alternative medicine for the treatment of various diseases. In this chapter, the research advances in the study of vitexin were described to view its physicochemical properties which include the use of UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier-Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry technology, and nuclear magnetic resonance analyses. This chapter also summarizes the bioavailability and pharmacological features of vitexin such as anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-viral, anti-cancer, antioxidant, antibacterial, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective activities. It is suggested that the mechanisms of actions of vitexin in exhibiting the pharmacological effects against various diseases are through modulating various genes and proteins involved in cellular and biochemical pathways. This chapter also sums up the findings obtained from in vitro and in vivo experiments, as well as the toxicological evidence and safety dosage of this compound to contribute knowledge for its future usage in medicinal research. Information on vitexin products available in the market, list of patents for vitexin including the importance, composition, and extraction are also discussed as an additional reference for future applications of this compound in the pharmacological and nutraceutical industries.
