Spontaneous event memories are verbally reported memories of specific experienced episodes that come to mind almost “out of the blue,” that is, with no preceding attempt at retrieval. Although many parents have experienced their children having spontaneous recollections, the phenomenon has until recently largely been overlooked in the developmental literature. However, in the last decade, the topic has received a spurning interest, where spontaneous recollections have been examined by means of both experimental designs and diary studies. Taken together, the results from these studies with young children suggest that spontaneous recollections constitute a prevalent and simple retrieval mechanism based on associations rather than deliberate search.
