Prejudice and Discrimination in the Contemporary International Arena
摘要
Prejudice and discrimination have been part of the human experience for millennia. In environments where prejudice and discrimination manifest, human identity is expressed to the disadvantage of the weak, poor, and powerless, thus entrenching the spirit of otherness. This chapter examines the enduring and varied challenges that arise from prejudice and discrimination in the contemporary international arena. Despite developments in human rights norms and international legal frameworks, countless forms of bias based on nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, regionalism, and other social classifications continue to fuel inequality, conflict, and injustice across the globe. Given this reality, the chapter argues that while globalization and increased interconnectedness offer opportunities for cross-cultural understanding, they have also created new avenues for the expression and intensification of prejudice and discrimination. Drawing on available literature through a desk research approach, this chapter analyzes how historical legacies, political rhetoric, economic disparities, and the expansion of digital platforms contribute to the spread of harmful stereotypes and discriminatory practices in areas such as migration, trade, international relations, and humanitarian action. Furthermore, it examines the intricate relationship between individual biases, systemic inequalities, and state policies that have exacerbated discrimination and eroded the principles of equality and non-discrimination enshrined in international legal frameworks. Overall, given the highlighted contemporary examples and analysis of the various facets of prejudice, this chapter emphasizes the imperative need for broad and concerted efforts at both the national and international levels to combat discrimination, promote inclusivity, and cultivate a more just and equitable global order where everyone feels welcomed and respected as a human being, regardless of gender, race, color, creed, or nationality.
