Although disaster is considered to have devastating impact on society, yet its impact is differential for men and women due to existing gender inequalities in the society. Women and girls experience not only direct effects of disaster but also indirect effects in the aftermath of disaster. Women suffer from ill effects of disaster in the form of loss of livelihood, deterioration in sexual and reproductive health, lack of access to education, and many more. In spite of this, there has been lack of substantial data and research study pertaining to vulnerability of women due to disaster and its aftereffects. It is still lacking substantial research in the area of proactive role of women in strengthening resilience to disaster. The role of women in promoting resilience to disaster through livelihood diversification, enhancement of digital infrastructure, and strengthening of social, economic, and human capital is hardly explored. As evident through various studies, women play a pivotal role in spearheading development; hence, the contribution of women in response to disaster may not be neglected. Women through leadership skill are in a position to promote social protection mechanism so that the recovery efforts could be equitable and inclusive. The women-led disaster response builds strong community networks so that resilience to disaster may be sustainable. The current research chapter is based on qualitative research design where case study method has been used to explore the contribution of NGOs in strengthening adaptive capacity of women toward disaster. The qualitative research design was selected in order to draw opinion of participants of the study. The interaction was mostly face-to-face which made discussion more vivid. The case study method of data collection allowed for comprehensive understanding of the real-life context. The in-depth interviews and direct observation facilitated the process of neutralizing power relations between the researcher and the participants. Objectives of the Study: This chapter seeks to delve into various initiatives taken by some selected NGOs in India for equipping women with knowledge and skills to build resilience to disaster.
